I met Courtney in middle school 20+ years ago when I moved to central Ohio with my mother after my parents divorced. Although we never “dated”, we were the best of friends. Together with my girlfriend and Courtney’s boyfriend, the four of us were inseparable buddies. Fast forward to high school: I move away to Kansas to live with my father and only see Courtney and the rest of my Ohio buddies on a rare holiday vacation back to Ohio. Eventually we both go to college and begin separate lives, marry, have kids, and never hear from each other -- I go overseas to fight two wars, and she becomes a medical professor at Johns Hopkins and Ohio State. Unknown to each other, we had both divorced and were single parents. It was six months post my divorce when I thought I should try the Facebook thing and reconnect with my old friends from so long ago. The first person I try is Courtney – and despite the fact our lives had taken completely different directions, we find out that not only do we now live in the same city, but our homes are only one mile apart, and our work locations are across the street from each other. Serendipity, right?! We meet for lunch, and three weeks later we are engaged! It was as though the friendship from so long ago had only had a minor interruption. The next couple weeks were great, but each day we learn that 20 years can change a person. We were not the same “Stand-by-Me” friends we once were. We both had our own careers and kids, and trying to make the “Brady Bunch” a living reality was much harder than the TV show. Although there were deep feelings for each other, we both knew our lives were not meant to converge. We said our farewells, exchanged house keys and rings and decided to move on. Now I find that in order for me to move on, I must open the security deposit box and sell the ring so that I can have closure.
